Ancestors

Definition

An ancestor is an item in an Asset Type model from which other items are inherited in the Asset Type Tree and the Asset Tree.

The ancestor item determines the properties of the descendant item, and the descendant inherits its properties and sub items from its ancestor.

In the Asset Type Tree an ancestor is an item (higher up in the hierarchy of the Asset Type Tree structure) from which a descendant item inherits properties and sub items that are configured in the ancestor’s Asset Type model.

In the Asset Tree each Asset is based on an Asset Type and the Asset inherits properties and sub items configured in the Asset Type model. An item in the Asset Type model is an ancestor of the corresponding inherited item in the Asset Model.

Business rules

An Asset Type can only be an ancestor of a Sub Asset Type, Linked Asset Type or Linked Component in the Asset Type Tree, or an Asset in the Asset Tree.
An Asset Type Component can only be an ancestor of an inherited Asset Type Component or Asset Component.
An Asset Type Task can only be an ancestor of an inherited Asset Type Task or Asset Task.
A linked detail record in the Asset Type Tree can only be an ancestor of a corresponding inherited linked detail record (Task Spare or Task Special Resource) in the Asset Type Tree or Asset Tree (Task Spare or Task Special Resource).
A custom item (e.g. an In-Place Asset Type or a custom Task) does not have an ancestor.
Every item configured in the Asset Type model for an ancestor Asset Type is inherited by a descendant Asset Type.

- Example -

An ancestor is a person from whom one is directly descended. For example, a person’s mother and father, grandmother, grandfather, great-grandmother, great-grandfather and earlier ancestors.

In the following Asset Type Tree structure for “Pumps”,

“[*1019] Pumps” is the ancestor of all the descendant “Pump” Asset Types.
“[*1115] Casing” is the ancestor of all the descendant “Casing” Components.
“[*1107] Fan” is the ancestor of all the descendant “Fan” In-Place Asset Types.
“[*1126] Gearbox” is the ancestor of all the descendant “Gearbox” Asset Type Placeholders.
