Maintenance Significant Items (MSI)

Definition

A Maintenance Significant Item or MSI is:

An Asset or Asset Component that can be maintained.
The level in an Asset model tree hierarchy at which costs need to be measured.
An Asset against which failure history is recorded and moves with the Asset if it is moved.
An Asset for which a preventative maintenance plan is executed.
An Asset that is easy to identify in the plant, factory or facility and for which it is practical to assign work.

Please note!

Maintenance Significant Items are identified in Asset Tree with a bold “M” in (MAPO) next to the node icon.
For example,
History of costs, work done and failures is kept for Assets that are identified as Maintenance Significant Items (MSI).
Only active Assets, In-Place Assets and Filled Asset Placeholders with Development Status “Confirmed” or “MAC” that are identified as MSIs and with For Scheduled Work Only not ticked (False) appear in Asset lookup lists for Work Orders.

- Example -

A Pump consists of a Motor, Gearbox and Coupling, each of which requires work that is specified with certain Tasks.

If the Pump is an Asset for which a history of costs and failures is required then it must be identified in Asset Tree with “MAPO”, which indicates MSI.

If a history of costs and failures is required for the Gearbox and Coupling then they must also be configured as Assets and MSIs.

If a history of costs and failures is not required for the Gearbox and Coupling then they must be configured as Components.
